Automerge is a CRDT-based data synchronization library designed for collaborative, offline-first applications. It allows multiple peers to edit shared data structures independently and merge changes automatically, without conflicts or central coordination. The system encodes causality directly into data, making concurrent edits safe by construction.

Beyond its technical merits, Automerge made collaboration feel local. It enabled applications where syncing is a background detail rather than a visible operation, helping shift thinking away from client–server models toward peer-centric, resilient collaboration. It became a cornerstone for practical local-first software.
